It’s safe to say that Pictures Music was one of the best labels of 2011, with an appallingly well-curated roster of artists like Dauwd, Lapalux, Koreless, Seams, Chairman Kato, Dark Sky and Rudi Zygadlo. It remains a small label with a trademark polish and a certain je-ne-sais-quoi feeling under every track. It’s that complexity that adds an extra dimension of characteristic Pictures quality to each release and makes them worth waiting for.
The newest addition to the Pictures family is Brighton-based producer Bobby Champs. Champs says “When I make tunes I imagine myself dancing to them at Fabric, if I can’t imagine people going nuts, it gets scrapped.” Despite being unknown until now, he’s already received support from Mosca, Pangaea, Funkystepz, A1 Bassline and Objekt. Labelhead Alex Clapworthy tweeted a debut track from Champs yesterday, called “All Night.” It’s a techno number that has the rare capability of getting the floor going at the beginning or the end of the night – smooth and steady, but it still gets under your skin.
After a few (okay, several) listens, we decided to fish for a little more from Bobby Champs. With just over 100 fans on his Facebook page and a statement of only a few sentences on the Pictures site, it’s hard to find much else to tell you about him, but we did find some more sounds.
