Villa Afterparty, Anyone?

House. Dubstep. Drum & Bass. Disco. Nu-Disco. Nu-Rave. Future Garage. Folkstep. French Electro-swing, Slovakian Hardstyle, Gypsy House, Crabcore and Post-apocalyptic BBQ Drumstep are but a smattering of often mind-bending categories plucked from today’s dance music genre tombola. ‘Belgian Disco’ doesn’t seem quite as specialised or exotic when stacked up against that rowdy lot, but underestimate at your peril; for the fellows coolly bobbing their heads at the back of the discotheque and leaving the pedestrian rabble to their own devices are providing the goose-bump inducing mid-tempo rollers and the inventive remixes that play a large part in underpinning today’s modern disco genre, moving it forward and injecting it with credibility.

You may remember we featured disco stallions Mustang on TRUANTS back in September, amongst their peers and countrymen we can count ex-Aeroplane-r The Magician and new kid on the block Mickey, all of whom are churning out consistently inventive and impeccably produced jams incorporating all shades of the disco spectrum. An afternoon spent razzing through these guys’ Soundcloud archives will demonstrate more than my ramblings ever could, and I recommend you do so.

Vying for the spot of team captains in this new wave of Belgian All-Stars are Fredo, Thang & Francois, united to use their powers for good rather than evil as disco trio Villa. With a moniker that conjures up hazy half-memories of hedonistic Balearic afterparty japery, their music is equally as enjoyable and is probably likely to get you in a lot less trouble when you find yourself stranded in the hills at 11am the following day without a cab number or indeed, your shoes or your dignity. I digress – originally a duo, Fredo & Thang were joined by seasoned producer and chum Francois after a decade of DJing together, thus the planets aligned and Villa was born. Throughout last year the V-word cropped up with reassuring regularity in the form of remixes for Golden Filter, Moby, Human League and Digitalism, plus my personal favourite, their remix of Findlay Brown’s Promised Land.

This time though they’ve nuked the target with their remix of Adeles Rolling In The Deep.  Adele’s rich, honeyed vocal is offset against ramped-up falsetto backing and loaded with vigorous heart-stabbing pianos to augment this rousing drum-banging belter. Believe it or not, this remix will not be officially released – but save your tears, put up the bunting and celebrate good times COME ON because TRUANTS has scored this little number in its full, mastered glory for you to wrap your ears around. FOR YOU. Yes, you! Amazing. Let’s stick this on get cracking – see you at the afterparty, yeah?

  1. Not necessarily a big fan of Adele, but I love this one as well as the Jamie XX shuffle of this track! When I saw VillA about three months ago there were two of them. Maybe there’s two of them playing out and three of them producing?
