Cunninlynguists – Stars Shine Brightest

I wish I could say I’ve been following the Cunninlynguists since their debut album, “Will Rap For Food” dropped in 2001 but I was woefully ignorant until a friends girlfriend linked me to “Seasons” five or six years ago. I’ve changed a bit since then and they have too. Kno’s production is smoother, generally a lot subtler and gone are the more comedic, almost slapstick subject matter that used to be common on their earlier records. While I liked those tracks (especially in high school), I definitely prefer their later direction. They definitely aren’t above a few wise cracks once in awhile though and the opening this new track got a chuckle out of me. “You can only see the stars when it’s Don Cheadle black.”

So here we are in 2011 and the group is gearing up to release their fifth album (Oneirology) after a couple years of hiatus for solo and side projects. “Stars Shine Brightest (In The Darkest of Night)” ft. Rick Warren is the first official leak/single off Oneirology. A track about everyday struggling that I’m sure almost everyone can relate to, over what I can only describe as sparkling summer night-time music. Motivational music rarely sounds this good. “Folding under pressure ain’t get us to where we at /when all hope’s lost you battle to get it back /in fact, dark times are when heroes shine /without them sour grapes there would be no wine
