The actuality that you are an admirer of Brodinski‘s DJ-ing is a given. But when it comes to Moombahton, it might be an entirely different story. People seem to either go wild to a bit of Dave Nada, whereas the other half tries to escape the club when the DJ slows down to 108 BPM, afraid of getting caught in a never-ending loop of pitched down Dutch House. The first time I was caught in this redoubtable loop was at a Munchi set last year, and it was – to my surprise – a lavish ambuscade with good vibrations all around. If it didn’t chill me out so much I could listen to it forever, but it has that tricky reggae(ton) effect where you get nothing done when you listen to it. Business is whatever and life is good, why don’t you pour yourself another drink? Although one of the godfathers of Moombah is a Dutch youngin’, the genre isn’t widely spread on European grounds. This is where Brodinski comes into the story – the master of melting a wide-ranging catalogue of music and delivering strong mixtapes. We’ve had house, hip-hop, Jerk, a recent Best Of… compilation and now it’s time for a little hour of slowed down Latin-ish jams. Familiar faces Munchi, Diplo, Maluca and Dillon Francis make an appearance on Brodinski: European Introduction To Moombahton as well as as some hidden gems picked out for you by the man himself, and a Gucci Vump Moombah remix.
For all the sleepyheads, here’s an explanation of the genre by David Nada once again: “Moombahton is mid-tempo global bass music for the universe. It’s a sonic marriage of electronic dance music (house, techno, and dubstep) with latin/island music (reggeaton, cumbia, and dancehall) that flows at a pace of about 108 beats per minute. Originally, moombahton started by Dave Nada slowing down tropical and dutch house records and re-edited them to sound like reggaeton’s weird little cousin. Because the tempo nears that of reggaeton, Nada created the neologism “Moombahton” by combining the title of the track “Moombah” by DJ Chuckie & Silva Cuomo and the “ton” ending of the word “reggaeton” and applied it to the new genre. Moombahton continues to grow worldwide as producers and DJ’s push the music in exciting new ways.”
