I really tried, but I just can’t seem to get that whole wave of female singers that are supposedly putting out strong and forward music and all end up sounding exactly the same. Excluding Florence and her extraordinary lungs, I honestly have a hard time keeping most of them apart. They’re all made using the same formula – cute face, semi-recognizable voice, good production and some trickled down overused edgy fashion like Balmain shoulderpads, military jackets and leotards. So I’m sorry — I’m sure it’s awesome to say you’re into electro-pop, folktronica, indietronica or whatever crazy genre those extremely hep Coachella folk have conjured up this year, but I guess I’ll skip out on being cool for now.
I’m not gonna lie though, they still keep showing up on my playlist but that’s mostly because they’ve been made into some great remixes. While Marina ~and the Diamonds~ sounds monotonous to me (and the lyrics to Hollywood are so hypocrite I feel like glueing her into that cheerleader outfit so she’ll have to walk home in them every day like that Veronica Mars episode), Fenech Soler and the always succesful Juan McLean have created great reworks of her hit Hollywood. Another lovable track is Polymath‘s extremely catchy remix of Ellie Goulding’s Starry Eyed, that has been pleasantly stuck in my head for weeks now. So it’s not all complaints then– if these girls keep making boring songs to serve as a basis for great remixes, then so be it!
