Square Mode’s mail had me lost for words – I literally only have this little information to tell you. The most straight to the point promotional mail I have ever received, probably. It went something like: “Hello, this is what’s up, bye.”. I got my search engine on and the following is what’s up: Square Mode is a duo from Helsinki (Emile, who is also a part of the Top Billin’ crew and one of the Emperatron dudes) and Paris (Mayckael, I can’t find anything on him but I’m sure he’s a lovely person). They did one track together earlier this year where they sampled Felix Da Housecat’s remix of Nina Simone’s Sinnerman called Pianobar, which you can stream here: it’s a track that kicks off as a smooth lounge jam but transforms into something a little bit deeper and somewhat more energetic towards the end. It’s a prime track, definitely. What Square Mode does thereafter, is putting out another version of the track called Pianobar 2 which is even better than the first version (download the 320 here): way more driving and leaning towards a classic house aria, where the piano parts rage and coalesce with the beefy percussion. It makes you wonder though, is there a way to stop the Helsinki crew from flooding Europe with tracks? Guess not. Square Mode took a trip to Kaiku Studios, which is/has been a home to the likes of our first love, last love, only love Femme En Fourrure, the new start chaps Renaissance Man and Zebra and Snake. The studio time resulted in this giveaway, a track called Klezmer. Once again, they hit the nail on the head percussion-wise and although the words “Klezmer” and “sample” might suggest that this is a track like many others, it’s a serious step up from many releases that you, dear readers, were all over last year (and don’t try to deny it). The sample is definitely there but it’s not overpowering their own supplement – they nicely work their way up to it with a versatile, hous-y two minutes build-up and then subtly mingles in with the Sirba. Seriously smooth production, too. Give it a try and get your straight-legged circle dance on, you mos def won’t regret it.
