Brewing Alternatives

Setting: A vast windy desert; nothing but pale sand for what seems an eternity. Dunes as big as skyscrapers and a never ending, cloudless blue sky. The sun is relentlessness and engulfs the world and everything around it in a white heat, distilling the scenery into it’s most basic and purest form. Out of the sand arises a man cloaked in black garbs; hooded and safe from the sterilizing sun. He roams the desert aimlessly, with no direction. Floating in a linear direction in a place with no end. He trips. The man in black is confused and scared. His pure linear world now, for no reason at all, has changed and even worse embarrassed him in front of the dunes he’s come to know and love. Disgusted and disgraced, the man searches for the answer. “Why did this happen! What sort of magick is this!” he exclaims. He’s discovered what he tripped on was what he once called, “Laptop”. The memories of “Laptop” come rushing back to him like a rapid epiphany. Oh the joys “Laptop” used to bring him! The games they would play. The discussions on why the newest Star Wars trilogy was the worst thing to happen to civilization since the Black Plague. And the music. The sweet, sweet music. They would dance and sing until a million suns had set and a million more suns had risen. The man in black was happy. The man in black was home.

Hello Mr./Mrs. Reader, wow it’s been a long time. New haircut? It’s good, it really brings out your eyes. Yes I’m back, and better than ever! Since the last time you read something I wrote, I’ve been venturing the world solving mysteries in a pick-up truck with a hippy pothead and a dog that talks! Actually it’s not as great as I make it sound, the pothead robbed me in the night, stole my identity, and drove off in my pickup. I’m dead broke now and just need a little cash for food, so I thought I’d write a couple posts. I am getting paid for this, right? Oh, I’m not? Seriously though, I am glad to be back and very excited to be writing again. Now then! It’s time to crack these knuckles of mine and get to work.

What I love most about Shonky’s tracks is that they all have this very classic and clean feel to them. The best way I could describe his songs is: a striped down ’90s house jam vibe with a more modern techno structure to glue it all together. KorgM1, a track of his newest EP on Spectral, definitely brings a ton of house-y flavor to the unsuspecting palette. A Nightcrawlers-styled synth really drives the track and makes it stand out amongst most house tunes these days. I’m not particular to house tunes, but this one really grabbed my attention. I’ve been listening to it non-stop since I bought it and still love every second of it.

The population of Fresno currently is 909,153. And out of that many people there’s only 2 people that produce dance music. 2 out of nine-hundred thousand people. Seriously. They’re may be more, who knows. I can’t find you guys when you’re hiding, that’s all I’m saying. Those two are myself and my good friend Patrick Patterson, otherwise known as Sea Shock. Me and Monsieur Shock have known each other for a while now, back when I was going by COLORSUCKER (had to change it, apparently when you say COLORSUCKER in a loud area people think you’re saying COCKSUCKER) and he was going by Ghostly Nature. We’ve DJed together a couple of times and pretty much every single time our sets are parallel to each other, except his sets are much more interesting and mine are like watching a car with a family inside of it slowly crash into a wall. Not to mention that I think he’s probably the most talented undiscovered producer in the history of mankind. I feel like he’s been playing this game for too long and with little reward, so here’s his newest track Shaman. It’s sexy, it’s fun, it’s downright delicious. The vocal synth makes me feel like a kid on acid in a ball pit. Tell your friends, tell your cats, tell your dead dad. Sea Shock for President of Funk  2010.
