A Touch of Jazz

Mayer Hawthorne, né Andrew Mayer Cohen, is a talented American producer/songwriter. Mayer’s debut album ‘A Strange Arrangement‘ was released in ’09 by my all time favorite & legendary recordlabel Stones Throw records (J Dilla, Dam Funk, Madlib, aloe Blacc). I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw label boss). “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.” The album has a beautiful soul vibe which defined Mayer’s style and got him some excellent reviews. “It’s old soul,” Hawthorne explains, “But it’s new.”

While Mayer Hawthorne & The Country were finishing a huge tour in cooperation with MAZDA2 a couple of weeks back, a DJ Jazzy Jeff remix of his latest single ‘No Strings‘ has been released. The remix is very funky and soulful and you’ll immediately  understand why it is nicknamed ‘DJ Jazzy Jeff Roller Boogie Remix‘ once you hear it. The entire track has a cool laid back groove with a deep bassline and a nice little synth that goes along with the vocal (which for some reason reminds me of Pharrell slash Justin Timberlake). And what’s even better is that they’re giving it away for free together with the original on the MAZDA2 website. All you have to do is blablabla.. Let me just save you the trouble and give it away here since the tour is over anyway, cool?
