Wham! Bam!

It’s funny that I say I kind of hate Christmas and yet this is my second post in a row talking about seasonal music, but of course there are some tracks that even a grinch like me can’t but love. I first came across Holmes Price last year when he put together this incredible cover of The Juan MacLean’s Human Disaster – he had tried to remix it but the original is so loosely done that it was nigh-on impossible to arrange, so he just knuckled down, replayed everything and sang it himself. In doing so he turned a haunting, plaintive expression of self-hatred into a cleansing dancefloor anthem. Well I’m writing about the guy now because he’s only gone and chopped up Last Christmas. Adding an even chuggier bass synth and reconfiguring the main riff, it’s a disco jam that works on the floor as well as on the radio. If people still listened to good music on the radio of course.

So as not just to be harping on about Christmas, there’s also a great edit of Eurythmics’ I Did It Just The Same, coming from Booshank, of the Wheel Me Out family, who I wrote about a while ago… The original is a simple piece, another four-chord chugger, with lots of Annie’s “mmms” and “oohs”. This edit takes the tempo up a notch, stretches it out and cranks up the sex drive. How appropriate then, comingĀ  from someone who is “currently studying towards a PhD in Applied Dildonics.” Yup.
