Citizen is from London and at this early stage that’s all we know, but we already know all we need to know about his productions even if there is just the handful released to date. They’re brilliant. Citizen’s output is full of character and flair charged with memories of the past glory of early 90s House music. Even though this nostalgia is there for everyone to hear it does not define the music on its own: there is no apparent novelty with the use of the 90s reference which is something that is quite rare as this era of music is often abused and dragged into the contemporary house scene, left with mediocre results probably more than any other when it comes to club music. In the case of Citizen, there is a sense of a deep-seated love of the music that is handled with care and used with the highest skill to produce some wonderful House music.
Some of the most eye catching of the releases are the remixes of two of the biggest female artists in the world at this very moment in time; Beyonce and Adele. Which is no mean feat, even though many try and carve there own sound upon the huge songs, they usually fall flat, or they are at least flatter than the originals. Yet Citizen manages to hold his own, in fact creates some really strong remixes. Especially in the case of Adele – “Rolling in the Deep”. The big heavy percussion acts as an inventive counterweight as it emerges from the white noise, to balance and stand up to Adele’s incredible vocals straight from the get go. Those stabs soon appear and bounce off everything giving the remix untold energy while vocals chops keep you entertained and listening, so effective they remain stuck in you mind long after the song ends. One of the most noticeable features of the remix is the build, which as soon as it begins it is ruthless in its motion, it holds a real command over the full track yet once released the listener is not left alone, the groove holds it’s own and carries it home. This is is house at it’s best. In the case of the Beyonce remix, Citizen strips the vocals away from the overplayed instrumental and fills it with a relentless tempo, stabs, snares, and old school breaks. All of which leaves no time for rest until Citizen wills it, for all intents and purposes it’s a real rave track. A rave track that thankfully avoids all the cheesy clichés and hallmarks that have been drilled into most peoples perception of this music. Although repetitive, the vocals do provide a catchy handle for the listeners to hold onto as they are pulled a long.
There is something that you do notice for such a ‘new’ act and that’s how well all the design aspects have been orchestrated. No matter how small they have been handled expertly, be it the simple creative videos for tracks like ‘Freedom‘, stylish type work throughout, there’s something more to Citizen and we for one can’t wait to see what that is.
