Truancy Volume 97: Pariah

When we say Pariah is one of our most favoured producers ever, we mean it; the quality of his output has always been unwavering. Needless to say, it has been a delight following him since his first release on R&S Records a couple of years ago. After his early interest in hardcore music and the emotion it purveyed, Cayzer’s musical development hinged on the discovery of the early dubstep movement and so the Pariah moniker was born where not long after he self-released “Detroit Falls.” Over the years, he’s moved from his own distinct brand of genre sewing, where vintage R&B samples were weaved seamlessly into pendulous 140 arrangements, to deconstructing dancefloors with his label mate Jamie Roberts known as Blawan. Pariah described their shared imprint Works The Long Nights as an endeavour to make “music to be played and experienced in a club environment.” The duo delivered their first defining release as Karenn in a remix for West Norwood Cassette Library’s “Get Lifted,” a bold shift from the sounds both artists were predominantly known for at the time. Stripped of laptops and software, they went in for an unruly assemblage of machines. Both seemingly in their own musical worlds, the sounds they create together come to life during their live performances, making for an unprecedented setup that is comfortably disruptive in a club climate where risks are a rare sight.

We are thrilled to present our 97th installment of our Truancy Volume series from Pariah himself. Where the not long past Karenn and Works The Late Nights releases are centred around music that is meant to be elevated by the club atmosphere, Pariah’s Truancy Volume digs further into the origins of where this emphasis stems from. This mixtape is a solid representation of Pariah’s sonic ethos and the mix itself features the inclusion of records like the definitive Oni Ayhun track “OAR002-A,” Sven Vath and a more current Trilogy Tapes release in its introduction, that all focus on the spacious and warmer side of techno. On the other hand, it later showcases a more merciless and weighty side alike in atmosphere to recent productions of his own, such as Power Vacuum and SCKT. Truancy Volume 97 is a welcome addition to our series and a rightful interpretation of the musical tastes and various influences from the producer cum DJ. Stream and download the mixtape below.
