Broke One, Don’t Fix It

Whether we like it or not – for the record, I don’t – summer is fast becoming a distant dream, the skies are darkening and the icy depths of winter beckon. Fortunately for us, now is the winter of our disco tent (sorry, sorry…). Just as an Italian police officer needs his Ray Bans and Popeye needs his spinach, we all need something to coax us out of the cosy embrace of the duvet & into the day ahead:  a double espresso, hot buttered toast perhaps, a cheeky cigarette or even a brisk run for the sadists among you that exercise outdoors – whatever it is that gets you going, abandon it, for I have an alternative. For me, my go-juice comes in the form of electronic bleeps & beats assembled into a sonically pleasing fashion to awaken the senses, played obscenely loud in my automobile and thus injecting a welcome ray of sunshine into an otherwise frosty morn.  At this juncture I’m delighted to throw down a TRUANTS exclusive for y’all with such an aural concoction, a tune literally laced with enough ‘go’ to propel me into the day at 4am with a grin of a lunatic on my face – and for someone who could normally be mistaken for one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse before 8am, this is no mean feat.

Step forward Italian producer Fabio Brocato who has been smacking out remixes and his own originals under the name of Broke One. Some of my favourite house music this year has been of Italian origin with the likes of Reset!, Fare Soldi and His Majesty Andre breaking through firing on all cylinders, and Broke One continues the trend with Go Go Go, a hefty wedge of Italo fizz that I’ve gleefully had on repeat for a few weeks now. In the initial honeymoon period of owning this I would actively look forward to my alone-time with this song in the car like star-crossed lovers look forward to snatched meetings and stolen kisses.  You can keep your ristretto and your macchiato; give me bounding, skipping rhythms that yield to skittering cut-up samples to succinctly encapsulate the hands-in-the-air spirito del rave, for we have ourselves a tune that swiftly beams one from bland reality at suicide o’clock to bouncing off the walls in a sweaty Milan disco den circa ’92. I’ve also been smashing Broke’s delicious remix of Reset!’s If We Try (The Love Anthem) which continues with the Italo mania on a synth-driven vibe – quite the anthem indeed.

Backed up by well-deserved  support from Azari & III, Shadow Dancer and Congorock, just remember, kids– you heard it here first. I’ve always wanted to say that. Fabio, if this is broke, don’t ever fix it.
