Since we last spoke to Alex Sushon alias Bok Bok one year ago he’s been an uninterrupted force, maintaining a busy tour schedule and putting out collaborative records as well as an EP of his own, the remarkable Southside EP that was released last Spring. It was put out through his own imprint Night Slugs (airhorn.wav), which is going strong as ever. Early last month they released two white labels over the span of a week, carrying out exactly what Sushon wished to do with the label: to put out more collaborations with vocalists. One white label is offered up by our man Helix, “Drum Track/No Hooks No BS” with the grime veteran Flirta D, and another by Jam City containing the infamous “The Courts” and a joint with Main Attrakionz on the flip entitled “The Nite Life“. The latter is also going to be the bonus track on his forthcoming debut full-length which is set to drop next month. Another track that will be on the record, “How We Relate To The Body,” can be heard in Bok Bok’s mix for the newly announced Night Slugs mix series, which in their own words is going to be “an in-house platform that will allow the key DJs in the camp to open up their collections and showcase their individual styles. Each volume will act as a DJ’s manifesto, stacking up to shape the wider NS universe” – wonderful news for all the fans of the label, especially the ones who remember the Lower End Spasm series, which was a classic array of mixes also curated by Sushon a few years ago (luckily, some installments still float around in cyberspace, such as the one by Jam City here or one by Jackmaster).
The inaugural Night Slugs mix of the series is what one would expect from Bok Bok, with over an hour of industrial and/or bass-heavy tracks, suitable for dancing as much as it is to energize you while you’re working. And of course, next to the gems that are available to the people, there’s a conventional and equally heady amount of forthcoming tracks and unreleased material included, produced by himself and his associates. Not only are you exposed to their new work, Bok Bok also clandestinely announces a new release by the Kansas-based MORRI$ through this mix (“White Hood”, the closing track). We’ve always been excited about the label from the start, but this mix makes us even more eager to see where they will take us this year.
