Preview: Mite & Ewalk – Body Tap

A few days ago the internet was blessed with two new tracks off of Mite & Ewalk’s forthcoming Body Tap EP on B.YRSLF division, the exciting French label that’s garnered some serious attention lately for its anything-goes approach to club music. Since its foundation last February, the label has put out a staggering 12 releases and helped launch artists like MYRRYRS, Cedaa, DJ Hilti, and Sines squarely onto the radar of clubgoers and headphone listeners alike. You probably know of Mite already for his role at the helm of Embassy Recordings alongside Distal, but his fellow ATLien Ewalk is a newcomer that we’ll be keeping a close eye on after hearing the previews for this release.

On “Body Tap” the two producers lay down some sunny Afro-Latin vibes, opening with an infectious conga-heavy groove that’s been topped off with an aggressive 808 snare rhythm. Meanwhile, colorful synth melodies lounge around and perform wistful maneuvers above the chaotic, percussive workout below. A purple-tinged half step breakdown lets you catch your breath, but Mite & Ewalk bring things back up to speed at just the right time and lead the track into a celebratory climax.

B.YRSLF division also uploaded Mite’s solo production “Hypersex,” which suggests there will be a solo offering from Ewalk on the Body Tap EP as well. This track is a purist’s nightmare, but it’s one of the most innovative and invigorating tracks we’ve heard in some time, so to hell with purism. Melodically, “Hypersex” is built around a superbly filtered synth pad that serves as a platform from which Mite’s impressive rhythmic sensibilities can deliver their message. Finding a groove somewhere between scissor-stepping garage syncopations, frantic Southern rap patterns, and jackin’ house swing, this one doesn’t land too far from FaltyDL territory. Mite earns extra points for the completely out-of-nowhere breakdown, morphing the track into a stark, confrontational banger sprinkled with some smutty vocal sampling – supremely stylish! Hopefully B.YRSELF will offer up some more previews before the May 7th release, but these two tracks will definitely tide us over in the meantime.
