Stream: Last Japan – Ambush EP Preview (LNUK Records)
“Ambush” is the latest release from South Londoner Last Japan, and a cheeky little one it is too. The lead track does what it says on the tin, lulling you into a false sense of security with a solid groove and a little click shuffle whilst its brilliance slowly creeps up on you. The drop is as satisfyingly deep as drops should be, and once this one gets going it doesn’t let up. “Ambush” is a cleverly produced song – the vocal hooks are used sparingly for once, and while it makes you nod your head to its eclectic rhythms, it’s also the kind of track you immediately want to feel pulsating through your body on a serious system. “Tactics” is similarly fresh, this time utilizing what sound suspiciously like samples of construction workers drilling to get your feet moving. The basslines in “Tactics” are just genius, and their synchronicity with the track’s percussion is superb. Combining the visceral appeal of a busy city street and the filthy sweat of a packed out club, looks like roadworkstep is going to be the next big thing. Think we can safely say Last Japan has won this one.
“Ambush” is out on April 16th on Lo Note Records.
