Anyone remember that Surgeon ‘Humanity Test’ mix from a couple of months back, that had the internet go into a small frenzy over the amount of exclusives and generally how great it was? If by some small chance you missed out on it the first time, we’d like to kindly direct your ears and eyes to his SoundCloud for you to check out. It’s an hour and a half of relentless techno grooves that showcased new tunes from producers such as Blawan, Roebin de Freitas and Randomer. However, one of the biggest revelations of the mix was that Surgeon himself had chosen to remix Darqwan’s classic “Said The Spider“, which was originally released back in 2002 on Texture Records. Fast forward a couple of months from the mix and out of nowhere a cheeky white label featuring this remix becomes available to the public. On the B-side Sheffield producer Aitcho provides a remix of “Flashing Lights”; a track taken from Darqwan’s debut album “To The Fly” which was released earlier this year.
Whilst the original “Said The Spider” merged dark 2-step and breakbeat that paved the way for the emergence of dubstep, Surgeon’s take on the track is strictly on a techno tip. Taking the original’s anthemic rave melody, Surgeon processes it into a killer slab of four by four action. For those familiar with the original, hearing that melody filter in around a set of heavy hitting kicks for the first time should no doubt make for a memorable clubbing experience. Beautifully engineered with unyieldingly precise production values this a must have for the tuffer-minded techno heads. Surgeon remixing Darqwan was always going to cast a pretty big shadow to whatever was on the B-side, but new producer Aitcho holds up his own with his remix of “Flashing Lights” and his inclusion on the release should appeal to those who like their techno a little less harder than it’s counterpart. Labelled as LTD001, this brings a promising second chapter to Textures output and provides an interesting relationship between two divergent scenes.
