Stream: Depth – Self Like Ocean

Londoner Depth is a captivating talent, coming across his soundcloud was one of those chance encounters that leave you feeling like you’ve listened to something rather brilliant. This ability to charge his productions with emotion and soul is for all to see in his magnificent “Self like Ocean” that you find all his well placed traits encapsulated. It begins with part of Philosopher Alan Watts‘s speech “The real you is not a puppet that life pushes around, the real deep down you is the whole universe” which eloquently flows into the production at various points and is paired into a duet of sorts with a moving female vocal that sings out “my life can change.” Questions soon start to roll around in your head which are taken deeper by the stirring production. Of course the track can be taken as just that, a track, something for a mix, something for a set like so many other great pieces of music built with the club as the template, but this track and many other out there prove that there is room out there with music with concept and moreover messages, not just flavour of the month phrases and synths, it lasts a hell of a lot longer too.

Depth’s second song featured “I wanna be loved” is a track with a lighter on tone in comparison, yet it’s build and breakdown and use of vocals create one of his strongest pieces, yet I can’t help think I want more of 1:35 onwards, where the emotion breaks through completely but it is restrained again within moments, unfortunately. That said it does have you doing what you should always want, craving more. “Looking Back” on the other hand is overflowing with feeling as the sultry female vocals clash with the strong percussion and bass throughout. An air of the oriental is present from the beginning which sits with ease amongst the arrangement and creates another contrast and once again adds another layer. Although it’s hard to compare such a distinguished track like “Self like Ocean” with the rest of his output, it really does stand up to it. In the end it provides good cause to be very excited about where Depth is heading.

Self like Ocean by Depth.

I wanna be loved by Depth.

Looking Back by Depth.
