It’s a London Thing

I’ve found myself in a bit of a predicament lately… I keep listening to all this UK Funky, Dubstep (the minimal percussive stuff as opposed to the hectic stuff featured on this lol-worthy tumblr) Glitch Hop, Juke, Future-Garage etc, and as a result have taken a temporary break from what I normally listen to. I’m a fairly pedantic person and I like to try and stick to one genre so I don’t feel as if I’m missing out on anything. Generally this entails searching wide and low for the newest Tech-House tunes, keeping my brother, my friends, and me pretty happy. Lately however I’ll been driving around with my crew listening to the ‘new new’ as that’s just what we do, showing each other what we’ve recently found etc! I’ll chuck on something that falls under one of those genres noted above and everyone in the car will laugh at me and give me shit! I’m not even really sure what it is about these strange, predominantly UK based sub-genres that I like so much. I guess it’s always refreshing to find something that sounds really ‘new’ and ‘fresh’ and is still in its early stages. I’ve developed a short attention span when it comes to music, I find that music ages too quickly and becomes boring way too fast. It’s like when I drive home with my dad after work and we listen to the radio (the channel we listen to being more or less ‘dance-free’) and I find myself hating on half the stuff that I used to love! See I don’t even really bother keeping up with bands these days, I told my dad that currently these are my ‘raving years’ and that I’ll keep all those Beatles, Doors, Led Zep albums on my external HD for when I grow out of this. Enough banter from me for now. I’ve included a small list of a handful of artists that I’ve been really into lately. Be sure to check them out if you haven’t already and perhaps let us hear your take on all these sub-genres! ?

Bonobo – I stumbled across Bonobo’s album the other day when the front cover of his new album ‘Black Sands’ caught my eye. A top notch album, perfect for those Sunday hangovers.
Scuba – I’m not sure what Scuba’s previous work is like but his new album ‘Triangulation’ is incredible. If you like Burial then this is definitely something for you.
Breakage – Breakage’s new album ‘Foundation’ has something for everyone! Dubstep, Jungle, Grime, Drum & Bass. The album is tied together exceptionally well and features some fantastic vocal appearances too.
James Blake – Found out about this fella via Mount Kimbie. His track ‘Air & Lack Thereof’ is probably the most played track on my iPhone of the past few weeks. Absolutely incredible.
Dubbel Dutch – I’ve been following Dubbel Dutch closely for a long time. He is always one step ahead of the game and his mixtapes & productions express this. His newest productions coming out on Palms Out Sounds are phenomenal. Be sure to keep an eye out for the release.
Deadboy – I know next to nothing about Garage but I’ve often heard Deadboy’s sound described as Future-Garage. Whatever it is, I love it! He manipulates the most infectious vocal samples and I can’t get enough of his tracks. Be sure to check out his remix of Delphic.

Another Bonus: Mat Cant from the Scatterblog crew recently finished a mixtape which is pure fiyahhh! Exactly what I need in my life right now. The guy is a serious tastemaker and a great producer too! He’s also feeling the UK vybz at the moment so be sure to check out his newest mix below and show him some love if you dig!
