Ever imagined what it would sound like if Spank Rock teamed up with In Flagranti? They haven’t, but In Flagranti have gone and remixed Mobroder, the collaboration between Spank Rock, Blu Jemz and DJ Hoff. Based on “the conceptual premise of the most successful disco artist of the ‘70s searching for his soul in an ‘80s Miami”, a Mobroder release has been in the pipeline but it’s taken till now for Rush (Rush Rush!) to see the light of day. Put out through the ever-exciting Scion A/V format, it comes with remixes from Nile Delta, Turbotito, Hardy Boyz, the aforementioned In Flagranti, as well as a Shazam remix of Love Duet, which features Spank Rock’s old foil Amanda Blank.
Spank Rock has been off the scene for an embarrassingly long time – OK so he’s Mark Ronson‘s MC this tour, which is cool, as hopefully all those pop heads will go see Mark and come away thinking “that MC was da bomb” or some other sort of irritatingly uncool way of putting it. But that’s not to say that Naeem is the only reason this project is worth checking out. Blu Jemz turned in what was my favourite remix of Drop The Lime‘s Sex Sax, while DJ Hoff was one of about a million DJs who took Amanda’s I Might Like You Better vocal and made a new track out of it, but one of only about seven who were able to make something fun and interesting with it. The remixes are a whole bunch of fun, but, bizarrely, In Flagranti sound more restrained and less freaky than ever before. I suppose if they had tried to go sexy on it things might have turned out overblown or even, shock, distasteful. In this case, and maybe in this case only, restrained is good. Meanwhile, Shazam does his funky disco jobby thing as usual, filtered to the max and fun for pool parties.

If only it wasn’t October and cold.
Thanks for the Shazam track. Huge fan.
