Hello, I’m Ross and I’m new here! I haven’t written anything in a long time, and that I’m sure will come across in this and what ever I write in the immediate future. But I’ll get better, with practice. Anyway, let’s get to the music! I have in recent years become obsessed with old Hip-Hop, and most of this love goes to the 90s. Well I think I’ll start with one of my favourites and someone everybody knows, OR DO THEY? Carl Terrell Mitchell, aka Tung Twista, aka Twista who with his release Runnin’ Off at da Mouth all the way back in 1992 proved he could rap real fast. If that wasn’t enough proof for you he made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for rapping faster than everyone else. He’s real fast. His second album Resurrection is one of my all time favourite albums. The beats, his flow and his lyrics are all immaculate. But of course the millennium had to happen and he hit the mainstream in 2004 with his album Kamikaze. Yeah, it had it’s moments with the singles Slow Jamz and Overnight Celebrity but it wasn’t as good as his past output, in my eyes. My point is this. His old stuff is gold and deserves to be listened to. So do it, here’s three to get you started.
Stream: TUNG TWISTA – HOKUS POKUS
First track I’ve got for you is Hokus Pokus, a B-Side from 1991. And like it’s title, it’s hella magic, or voodoo, both word’s make it into the song so you pick one. It seems like he had fun with this one. Enjoy.
Stream: TUNG TWISTA – SCAT LIKE DAT
Next we have quite a special one. Scat Like Dat from Resurrection. It seems like Twista’s showpiece on the album. He points out at the start that he “Scats” over “something jazzy on the cut”. All I hear is him rapping fast, because we know he likes to do that, on a jazzy beat no less, so I guess that’s scat!
Stream: TUNG TWISTA – ONE SHOT ONE KILL
Right, I’ve saved the best till last. One Shot One Kill, which also happens to be off Resurrection. It starts dark and only gets darker. It features some of the best lyrics on any Hip-Hop track I’ve heard. Twista is accompanied by some guys called Speedknot Mobstaz (terribad name) and B-Hype, none of which let the standard slip, if anything they push each other to new heights. I suppose these tracks all highlight’s my views on most Hip-Hop. Past = good. Now = ok, in doses. Gotta keep it a bit pretentious, people! ?
BIENVENUE, WILKOMMEN, WELCOME! ?
