For the past few years, Marc Glasser aka Dubbel Dutch has quietly insulated himself within the ever-growing North American club music sound. Borrowing bits and pieces from everything from Jersey/Baltimore Club to grime and throwing them into a blender with elements of dancehall, the Brooklyn by-way-of Texas resident has separated himself from the Soundcloud masses despite only releasing a spattering of singles and EPs since 2010. Glasser’s latest effort comes in the form of the “Self Help Riddims” EP, his second release on Dre Skull’s Mixpak label and his most singular release to date. Whereas Glasser’s past releases have bounced from sound to sound without any real cohesion, offering bright yet brief highlights, “Self Help Riddims” is firmly rooted in populist dancehall and grime with a futuristic edge.

It’s difficult to decipher exactly how a Brooklyn by-way-of Texas producer is so invested in combining grime, dancehall and other club forms into a series of unavoidably infectious riddims, but let’s just chock it up to the democratizing effect of the internet. From the gun shot bass hits on “Mirror Test” to the undeniably ragga vocals and bassline on the title track, the EP repeatedly dips into tried and true dancehall and grime methods. Counterpart to these genre lynchpins are the beatific harp on “Ice Bath” and the melodic-as-ever synth melody on “Look Back”. The EP succeeds at a point where tried-and-true methods of dancefloor shaking meld with a contemporary sense of melody and song structure. Not only is “Self Help Riddims” an incredibly fun tape to play out in virtually any light-hearted situation, but it’s a series of credible songs as opposed to bits and pieces of tracks. Whether it was the Mixpak/Dre Skull pairing or just good ol’ fashioned artistic development that brought him to this point is up for discussion, but the fact remains that Dubbel Dutch is at the forefront of American dance music.
