Remixes & Blues Pt. I

Originally, the purpose of this post was to hand you over twenty-five R&B remixes. Listening to Mala’s Alicia for the 1000th time, which is probably one of my favourite tracks ever done by Mala if not one of  my favourite tracks ever, it occurred to me we needed a top list of good R&B remixes on here – especially since we have been posting lots of good remixes and edits lately.  The luxury problem I bumped into was that after giving my fellow Truants a heads-up about how they should suggest me their favourite free R&B remixes, the suggestions didn’t stop. The count of my playlist has almost hit three digits now, so making this a returning item sounds like a better concept to me than overwhelming you with all of them in one go. Patience is a virtue and all that. The first remix I’d like to kick off with is a simple yet effective edit of Aaliyah’s Are You That Somebody by London’s Deadboy, who recently released a teaser of the best Drake edit ever made. Deadboy is quite familiar with making good R&B edits and mixes: get his Tearjerkin R&B Mix here (track listing in the comments) and look into Cash Antics Volume 1 as well. You most definitely won’t regret it – a big love for the work Deadboy has been putting out from me. This edit is composed, tranquil – kinda simple, but does its trick pretty well.

AALIYAH – ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY (DEADBOY EDIT) (320 kbps)

While we’re on the subject of good Aaliyah vybz, I recommend you to check out one of our posts from last week that had a Rock The Boat edit. One of my favourite R&B remixes ever released is the another one for the same track, where the boys of Soul Clap turn the original into a funky house hit – it was given away on their RnB FreE.P, which holds two cheesy remixes for Bobby Brown and Hi-Five as well, worth a listen. Now it’s nothing new that Soul Clap are good with making paradisaic riddim and blues remixes, may I refer to their Extravaganza edit that had half of their fan base in tears and the other fifty percent trying to  make love to their speakers? This too, is golden.

AALIYAH – ROCK THE BOAT (SOUL CLAP REMIX) (320 kbps)

One more Aaliyah remix for your time, this one’s done by Mr. R&B Knowledge Brenmar, who dropped a remix for Groove Theory’s classic track Tell Me last week on The Fader. This one’s way more up-tempo than the other two but in a good way, with an injection of fun percussion and a nice vocal crafts too. Give his track Back Beating another listen while we’re on the subject of this talented producer from Brookyln in relation to R&B. He’s done a lot more, and he’ll definitely pop up in the Remixes & Blues item more often!

AALIYAH – R U THAT SOMEBODY (BRENMAR WINDY CITY MIX) (320 kbps)

I used to have such a big crush on Robin Thicke in 2002-2003: when he released that worldwide hit that sampled Beethoven, When I Get You Alone, I was immediately hooked to his lustful vocals and his Orlando Bloom like looks. And that track he did with Lil Wayne, Shooter, too much.  I must admit that in between the release of his album A Beautiful World and his last one Sex Therapy, I must’ve been distracted by other dreamy types but when I picked up on his music again it was a-okay (although I haven’t listened to that track he did with Leighton Meester yet). The self-title track of the album was pretty good but I wasn’t too convinced, comparing his new stuff to that he released at the beginning of last decade.  Then Bird Peterson remixed Sex Therapy and it was all I could ever wish for, and better.

ROBIN THICKE – SEX THERAPY (BIRD PETERSON REMIX) (320 kbps)

This edit of Sadie Ama’s Falling is done by Newcastle-based producer Psychonaught. He has one EP out on Kursed Recordings and it wouldn’t surprise me if we would hear more from him soon – give his EP a listen, and while you’re at it, listen to the rest. There’s Destiny’s Child, there’s Birthday Sex, but his edit for Sadie Ama was definitely my favourite one from his supply of edits.

SADIE AMA – FALLING (PSYCHONAUGHT’S RE-STEP) (128 kbps)
