Stream: Shlohmo – wen uuu (Evenings Remix)
We came upon Evenings early in 2011 when Wedidit posted the debut EP of Nathan Broaddus’ bedroom project, “North Dorm”. This five-track EP was nice listen, however only with the release of “Lately’ the Charlottesville-based producers showcases full talent. Talent which lately has been honored as Evenings contributed an official remix for Shlohmos’ “Vacation” EP.
“Lately” is equally sound design and songwriting, experimental DIY. and pop music. Irrespective of a few vocal samples the LP is complety instrumental and densely orchestrated with samples of any kind. The whole sound is very compact and well-saturated; you can easily imagine this to be the soundtrack for a day off with the late Summer sun dancing on your lashes. Actually, all the beauty and peacefulness effectively masks the loose and disjoint beats Broaddus uses for his songs. Which is great- ‘Lately’ works as an ambient records and sophistated work of collage music, too.
Evenings clearly falls into the breed of post-post hip-hop producers (ehm) that advanced from rap to instrumental beat music to something new. Say Shlohmo, say Clams Casino, Matthewdavid, Ssaliva, you name it. However Evenings’ productions are closer to what you might want to call ‘song’ than some of the peers mentioned. Pop collagists like The Books, Fog, and of course Four Tet and Caribou likely had an influence on Nathan Broaddus. The focus on larger-than-life melodies is what we love about “Lately” the most. Thus, we are happy to offer a Truants-exclusive MP3 download of “Softly, We Go“, an eight-minutes “dive into absolute bliss” with sparse percussion and precious guitar, ghostly organ tones and a lot of tape hiss.
