These days we try not to ask for much. With the flurry of young producers all scrambling for our attention, sorting the gold from the rusty old crap seems exhausting at times, when all we want is something just a little bit considered. Luckily for us, there’s still a ton of gold around if you know where to look. And it seems unlikely Southampton is the place to look, as that’s where our new favourite slow jam producer Gang Colours hails from. Gang Colours (aka Will Ozanne) was signed to Gilles Peterson’s brain-meltingly brilliant Bronswood Recordings back in 2010, and his “In Your Gut Like A Knife” EP totally blew us away around this time last year. Ozanne’s love of evocative rhythms and desire to make music that genuinely moves you combined with his love of garage sees him ticking a whole ton of Truants boxes. His full-length “The Keychain Collection” solidified his position as a producer capable of making those sounds that the kind of delicate dreamscapes that you need on your headphones sometimes.
Latest offering “To Repel Ghosts” is a single from the aforementioned release, and it’s completely lovely. Despite its subtle, insistent percussion, this is one for your heart and your head rather than your feet. Featuring the gently applied piano samples that are becoming his trademark, “To Repel Ghosts” seems to let in more ghosts than it drives away – the track is a layering of love stories, each more haunting than the last. Simple and beautiful, two words that you’ll soon learn are easily applied to tracks by Gang Colours.
