Recommended: Nina Kraviz – Ghetto Kraviz Edits

The edit is a refreshing and appealing musical concept in today’s remix culture, as it places value in moderation instead of flashiness or vanity. It’s an art form that requires a particular combination of balance, restraint, and intuition that many producers simply lack. Venture too far from the original and you’ve lost touch with what makes an edit appealing, but stay too close and you’re better off with the original. Truly great edits are musical compromises that stand out for their light-handed application of new ideas. Earlier this week, London-based imprint Rekids released a previously vinyl-only edits package of “Ghetto Kraviz,” the smoldering lead single from Nina Kraviz‘s sensational debut album. The two edits on the release, courtesy of French producer Amine Edge and previous Kraviz remixer Alexkid, bring fresh stylings to the original track while preserving its sexy, irresistible nature.

Stream: Nina Kraviz – Ghetto Kraviz (Amine Edge Edit)

First up is experienced producer Amine Edge, whose signature “G-House” sound (according to his SoundCloud) draws influence from 80s hip-house and deep funk bass lines. His interpretation of the track finds a more deliberate groove than Kraviz’s original, with a fuller percussion section (those hi-hat sixteenth notes!) but less rhythmic variation overall. The tension-building, minor-key string swells from the original are notably absent, but Amine crafts an edgy atmosphere with some dubby reverb and filtered hissing sounds in the background throughout. Not to be outdone, Alexkid delivers a darkly rolling edit that matches the smoky, subterranean feel of the video, perhaps better than the original track itself. The beauty of this edit is all in the details, like the chopped fragment of the “S” sound at the end of the vocal loop, or the unexpected yet smooth timing of rhythmic transitions. We’ll put our money on this one, but you can’t go wrong with either offering here. Now if we could just understand what Nina Kraviz is saying in the song…
