Recommended: Mess Kid – Sip Slow EP

Once again Freshmore has dropped a Southern leaning, bass heavy, hip hop EP. Entitled Sip Slow, this EP comes from Mess Kid and is a single track backed by three remixes by Morris, Cedaa, and Nikko. Kid’s original takes some time to get into the swing of things with a 2-minute long intro, which drops off into a sample that would make Juicy J proud only to come back in laced with bass and arpeggios. All this combined creates the desired “oh this is tough” head nod effect. Similarly to how the track is built up, it comes down, slowly stripping back elements until it closes near the 6-minute mark.

The remixes carry as much, if not more weight than the original. Listening to Morris’ mix you can hear his signature crushed, 808 driven sound cut through the mix. He starts off with the vocals that Kid uses halfway through his original and adds some DIY trap grit to the track along with multiple peaks and drops. The overall mix has an almost big room vibe to it and shows off the typical sound palette of Morris. Cedaa’s mix is a bit cleaner and cuts to the chase much quicker than the other two. Using the same core elements as Morris, Cedaa puts an emphasis on the vocal and arpeggios, which occasionally dip down an octave. The mix sounds similar to other Cedaa records; it has a toned down footwork sound. Nikko takes an atmospheric approach to the mix, using lofty pads and distorted keys with rolling hats. All of that is wrapped in the cut up “on da pill and that purple pint of surp” vocal and a wide high resonance filter creates the most varied and what might be the strongest track on the EP. Freshmore has cranked out another solid EP from a new artist so don’t sleep on this and don’t miss out on the free download of Morris’ remix.
