Lianne La Havas was an unexpected addition to the singer-songwriter panorama last year, but nonetheless a welcome one, with her gratifying balance of silken delicacy and uninhibited edge. This remix from Shlohmo is also a very welcome surprise, with the LA producer bridging the gap between himself and La Havas by focusing on what the two have in common: a sparkling ability to transfigure raw emotion into something beautifully refined. An unrelentingly sinister bassline shadows the entire track, but Shlohmo makes sure the gorgeous textures of La Havas’ voice receive some well-deserved attention too. The track descends into the skittish anxiety of post-club stroll towards its end, which seems fitting considering the lyrical disappointments explored in La Havas’ original. Dark and lovely; expect this to be re-remixed into oblivion, but hopefully not before it graces a dancefloor or two.
