Review: Outboxx – Kate Libby’s/Bertie’s Groove

I think we can all unanimously agree that good music is in abundance at this moment in time. The dumbfound selection of debuts coming out is staggering and they all seem to be astonishingly great. Glaswegian Koreless recently proved how much hype a first release can bring and I’d like to imagine Outboxx will reach similar heights with their recent debut on Kidkut’s Bristol based label Immerse Records, home to very early releases from the likes of Benga, Sigha, Ramadanman and other now very influential names. Now in its remarkable 4th year and 25 releases under their belt, it’s a label which can pride itself on a wide variety of genres fusing a mixture of Dubstep, Techno, Garage, IDM and now something on a more stripped down house vibe, which should only do wonders in expanding their fanbase.

Now you’ll have to excuse me for not knowing very much about Outboxx apart from they’re a duo made up of two guys, hailing from Bristol called Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert. I also know the Jacob guy goes by the alias Hodge when working solo, whom you may recognise from his release on Pollen with the fantastic Hackman remix. Now with Bristol heavily recognised as having strong roots in the dubstep scene its great to see a more 4×4 approach coming out of the city and it seems it’s direction that we will be seeing more of in the future with new artists such as Vessel, El Kid and Crackazat all opting for the sound and it’s something I highly approve of. On the A Side Outboxx open up with ‘Kate Libby’s’ a sinuous journey through ascending synths, pads and wonderfully constructed percussion, bound together with a delicious squelchy analogue bass line and melodic jazzy keys. On the flip side ‘Bertie’s Groove’ is slightly more upbeat yet stripped back to just the essentials. If I had been playing in Miami this year think these would have been given a right seeing too. Too bad all you famous people are going to have to wait till next year to play em..
