For the last few years Canadian wunder-kid Laberge (is he even a kid any more?) has been putting out blissed-out disco tunes that seem to evoke an imagined perfect summer. If that sounds clichéd, well go and listen to him. He’s got a huge amount of stuff on his Soundcloud, much of it free to download, and he’s constantly making new stuff. His latest jam, Diamonds, is a slowed-down deep house track, with a simple, emotional set of chords that are beguilingly gentle at first but expand and contract over the course of the track. These are surrounded by lightly expressed phrases and touches of melody, and it all adds up to the feeling like you’ve just opened your window on a Saturday morning and the sun is shining for the first time after a cold and dismal spring. The real gem, however, is Yesterday, which is even slower and more seductive, replaying the words “it was only yesterday” throughout. It’s killing me that I can’t place the sample, but for me that just adds to the elegiac feeling of lost nostalgia.
