Something a little different this Sunday. Some Bay area raps from Roach Gigz & Lil 4 Tay. Not gonna pretend to be on an expert on either (I came across Roachy Balboa browsing myspace last year) but I’ve been stepping my hyphy game up since. This is a new project from yet to be announced new project/mixtape (“Bitch I’m A Player”?) that sees both rappers telling us they’ve been going wild since jump. It’s a fairly mellow beat but they both sound great and that chopped chorus is a perfect compliment. “In the third grade/ I grabbed a girl by her braids, and made her kiss me/ Ew/ Sticky”. Be sure to give Roachy Balboa a shot as well.

Been meaning to post this for a while but due to crazy university applications and Colombia it unfortunately got put on the back burner for a while, so massive apology to Croz for the slightly long wait. However in my sort of defence I feel the song is much more suited to the brilliant weather the UK is having at the moment, instead of the winter vibes from two months ago! You might have previously heard of Croz from a couple of mentions on TRUANTS, one about the excellent rework he did of Burial & Four Tet and the other on a brilliant mix he did tha got featured in our ‘5 Mixes Are Better Than One’ feature. This time he’s taken the classic track “When Will I Be Famous” by the Bros and spruced it up with a modern polish, bringing out the original bassline and turning it into an unexpected bomb on the dancefloor. The track has also managed to weave its way into the hands of the people over at IDJ Magazine who featured it in their April Issue. Boy done good.
Melted Music is an urban/electronic label from Northern Ireland. I just discovered them through a free release they dropped this week from Northern Ireland-born, Liverpool-based producer SertOne. It’s a collection of 13 different remixes he’s put together of hip-hop acts like DOOM, Little Brother and Busta, and more electronic artists such as Koreless and Machinedrum. We’re sharing the remixes of Busta and DOOM – this remix of “Gazzillion Ear” uses Flying Lotus and Dilla-esque beats and basslines with woozy synth lines and soaring melodies. Perfectly complementing Mr Dumile’s streams of consciousness. On “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” he uses enough of the original beat – amazing as it is, it’s right that he should do so – that adding his own around it is both reverential and forward-thinking. The instrumental he weaves beneath Busta’s then uncharacteristically calm rap (this is from 97 remember) is so funky and life-affirming it should have you welcoming Monday morning with joy in your soul. This is just for openers, go cop the whole thing!

It’s an obvious statement, but we love The Weeknd and when we saw that Melbourne resident Bosstone had upped a refix of “What You Need” we couldn’t of been more happy. This simple edit keeps the beauty of the track intact and instills a template of club percussion to give it that extra bite, which is all the song really needs if anything at all to give it that cross over. It also gives it a vital re-freshening, because we know more than anyone how overplayed this track is, anyone who takes a look at the “House of Balloons” play stats on any of member of TRUANTS’ iTunes would know. But if this means more DJs are more inclined to play this wonderful track now and people who don’t know anything about the outfit get to hear them, that’s all that matters. Everyone needs to hear The Weeknd after all.
