Stopmakingme

Its very unusual these days for someone to make their name from DJing first before trying their hand at music-making. Unusual, but not impossbile, as Stopmakingme is proving. Well known for his residency at legendary London nightclub Fabric, he now brings us his debut EP “Wrapped In Plastic”, set to drop on November 22nd.

If you need some convincing, then there are some heavyweight names to drop – Erol Alkan hand-picked him to be resident DJ for Phantasy Sound, hosting their radio show and helming their new club night, while the EP itself is receiving support from Alkan, Simian Mobile Disco, Filthy Dukes, Justin Robertson, Matt Walsh & Mumdance.

The EP is culmination of all things he loves about the dancefloor and influences he’s absorbed from London life. Arpeggiators and analogue synths; oddball Italo Disco big enough to work in main rooms; rolling Krautrock basslines and current bands like Factory Floor who have helped resurrect them; Hot Mix 5 hand claps; pulsing electroclash with camp vocals; the simplicity of ESG and every other early Factory Records release as well as the modern day electro he’s grown up on like Simian Mobile Disco, The Chemical Brothers, Erol and Tiga, all of whom he’s had the chance to warm up for, hands shaking uncontrollably every time.

Dan’s love for Trash, Optimo, Soulwax and older references like The Paradise Garage all come through in his DJ sets where electro and techno sit alongside updated post-punk, huge disco, mutant new wave and perfect pop choruses whilst no momentum – or any dancefloor – is lost.

He also co-runs the hugely successful Kill Em All club night with the Filthy Dukes, championing new music made by live bands as much as electronic artists. It’s a place where “an amazingly exciting new live act could blow the mind of a techno kid whilst an indie band in the corner think of how quickly they could sell their guitars and buy samplers when dancing to Boy 8-Bit.”

Make your own minds up though – very kindly he has donated a couple of MP3s for us to share with you in order to sample what is coming. And we also have a very tidy Autumn mix as well!

  1. absolutely loving ‘discuss’. i wasn’t much for the others, but ‘discuss’ is solid. very catchy! was love on first listen. if he continues with that particular style house/disco, i’m definitely on board. look to hear more from this guy.
