What do you say when the tree falls?
Oh shit…
I’m not sure this should work. Timber, a single from Coldcut‘s 1997 album Let Us Play!, was a sort of cry out to the world about the violent destruction of forest areas across the planet. A clatter of grinding saws, electronic and manual, rattled against the plaintive sounds of a forest crying for mercy. The mournful song of a forest woman was drowned out by the sound of the flattening of her homeland. Or so it seemed. The video made all of these ideas even more emphatic. It was a pretty special moment in terms of the pairing of sound and image, and it still looks pretty cool today. To Today. As part of the Ninja Tune XX project, the track has been remixed by under/over/underground pioneer Seiji and turned into a snarling dancefloor weapon. The buzzes no longer contain the same level of animosity, but they still grind with with an intense ferocity. Snarling buzzsaws always have a place on discerning dancefloors, right? Whatever about the rest of the Ninja Tune XX remixes, this one is definitely a success, and will hopefully grab back some attention for Coldcut, sadly silent since 2006’s Sound Mirrors. Come back guys, we need you.
