For our nineteenth Truancy Volume, we present you with the up and coming Voltron: a deejay trio hailing from Belgium that are emerging to be a promising talent for the coming year. Together with fellow Belgian DJs Ultravid, they run the young small label Silverback Recordings, which in their own words is “trying to define the future sound”. With the label’s latest releases being Nguzunguzu’s Mirage and Jack Dixon’s Substitute, plus a smashing remix EP for Nguzu’s fresh energetic release on the way featuring remixes by the likes of Canblaster, Dubbel Dutch, Munchi, Gongon, Bad Autopsy, Berou, Girl Unit and Brenmar, we have to commend these boys from Belgium for their outstanding taste. Aside from this, Voltron have delivered an exclusive mix for Discobelle in the past and have a release coming up on Discobelle Records as well. Read on as the boys from Voltron give us the 411 about their sound and ofcourse the nineteenth Truancy Volume that we present to you in this post!
TRUANTS: Can you tell us a little bit about how Voltron started out? Mathias and I met at the skatepark about 8 years ago. We have both been interested in music since a long time, but we started getting into electronics on a more serious level simultaneously. We were buying vinyl records, going to the same gigs, both spending a lot of our time on house music. So, it felt like a natural evolution to wanting to start playing out records, and do this together. After a few years of being really passionate with dj-ing, listening to mixtapes and hunting for tracks, a logical next step seemed to be to trying to make our own songs. So we picked up Ableton and gave it a go. Soon, Mathias’s brother Laurens joined us for the productional side of things, as he is schooled on multiple instruments and was more experienced in composing and arranging tracks.
Describe your sound in five words. Describing our sound is always a hard question. Listening to our mixtape will give you a good idea for starters. But this should do: we try to bring cutting edge house music, with quality as the primary criterium, without being star-struck by hypes.
What are your plans for the near future? In the very near future we are going to release our first EP on Discobelle Records. We wish to thank Martin and the rest of the team, as they have been super supportive to us and are delivering an awesome job on the daily in general. We know they are very passionate about music, so everything about the release feels right with them. Besides originals, you can also expect some remixes, and of course, we’re going to keep managing Silverback Recordings, the label we established this year with our homies Ultravid. We’re very happy with the amazing EPs that got released already, and are enthusiastic about the stuff standing in line.
Tell us a little bit about this mixtape. For this mixtape we selected a few older tunes we really like and wanted to share, next to some newer gems and a couple of exclusives from amazing artists we support like Nguzunguzu, Canblaster, Sam Tiba, Bad Autopsy, Manaré.
What’s the perfect setting to pump this mixtape to? We didn’t have a specific setting in mind for this mixtape to listen to, but we like our mixtapes starting mellow, so we can gradually build to a climax. So I think you can listen to it just after waking up, but as well before a night out. I can’t give you an ideal timing actually, because those are most of the tunes we’ve been listening to all day lately anyways.
