James Blake Harmonimixes

It is always a bit of a task to not turn this platform into some sort of fan site for one certain artist or label, but I’m conscious about the fact that sometimes we write about the same producer about five times in a mere two weeks and turn out to be more of a mailing list anyway. I ain’t mad though; this is what you get with a crew of pretty like-minded cats behind these articles. We have bombarded you with tracks we could describe as whimsical, utopian and out of this world these last couple of weeks. Today I will continue this rage and more precisely the continuously James Blake hype. I want to tell you about his alias Harmonimix today – I had this article on hold because uprightly the spotlight should be on his new EP Klavierwerke at the moment, but a girl needs to do something with her time while procrastinating like a thug.

It might be due to the fact that I never check the board that is to some like the sacred writings and authority and the center of dubstep (my spellings check dared to correct dubstep to dustpan – I assume my corrector is one of those kids crying about dubstep on the daily),  but it didn’t occur to me that Londoner James Blake was the man behind the Harmonimixes that have been floating around last year — it all made sense when I found out not too long ago. The pitch-bending, the glitches, the untarnished touch of auto-tune only Blake gets away with. Taken the fact that James Blake’s ‘hit’ CMYK samples Kelis´ Caught Out There, the choice of the Harmonimixes make even more sense, adapting the likes of Snoop Dogg and Pharrell, Destiny’s Child and Outkast. My motto is; RnB refits for life. While I hate bigging up rips, this will be the second exception to the rule this week. The very first Harmonimix I’d like to kick off with is the only one that you can buy on white label currently (although more remixes will be released hopefully soon) – it’s a track whose original is hated by a lot of people but loved by many more: Lil Wayne’s A Milli. Only Blake could manipulate Wayne’s, excuse my French, sometimes repulsive vocals to melodious chorales. The track puts Lil Wayne is his place in a way, adding a lot of emotional weight to the track and turning it in a harmonious aria and don’t get me wrong – I love Weezy but this track here is about a twenty-seven times as good as the original.

The Harmonimix for former Roll Deep member Javan St. Prix better known as Trim (a nickname he got because he would always turn up to football practice with messy hair) just has an insane build-up, like mindbogglingly insane, but oh – it’s Blake here. Nothing new. It doesn’t take away that the track is yet another treat and my personal favourite of the Harmonimixes. James Blake has been using this track as an outro to his sets and honestly, I can’t wait until I hear this in full quality and preferably very loud so that I become one with the synthesizers. A release might be on it’s way. Also, this rip is one from a radio show so you have someone ruining the mood and talking over the tune at the end. However, do enjoy.

Then there’s three other Harmonimixes I’d like to share, for some tracks we all used to jam to on the daily back in the days, and not going to lie, I still do nowadays. The point is that James Blake’s characteristic harmonizations not only work in his original productions but also do him justice as a remixer. Of course he’s been working his magic on Untold and Mount Kimbie before and this doesn’t come as a surprise for most of us. I guess that his Harmonimix moniker would be the sideproject that he does “just for fun”. Oh Blake, I wish that was me.
