Sunday’s Best Pt. XIII

It’s Sunday, literally on the verge of Monday, but we weren’t going to to miss out on another Sunday’s Best! Here is the 13th edition consisting another collection of tracks that have been tickling our fancy the last week, starting off with the wonderful New York based Deniz Kurtel. Wolf & Lamb affiliate and lady of the moment recently released her debut album “Music Watching Over You’ and the amount of support and praise it has been receiving has been tremendous. Having just finished her Europe tour and immediately begun her US and South America, she is someone who could be said to be in very high demand at the moment! With great tracks like Manhunter I can see why.

Now having been a long time fan of Instra:mental the news that one of the guys Al Beek was making solo tracks under the guise Boddika, revolving around a slower tempo, lots of outboard analogue gear and heaps of experimentation, got me more excited than the thought of Jurassic Park 4. For me that is big news. Also big on the news front was that Hotflush boss Scuba was compiling a hefty 2 CD compilation from an assortment of artists including Boxcutter, Sepalcure, Mount Kimbie, Pangaea and many others. Combine Hotflush Compilation times Boddika and you get the fantastic Warehouse which they’ve kindly given out for free download. Think 808’s and mixture of acid and you’ve got a track that should get any crowd going.

Sleep could be said to be one of the least productive things in the world. I heard we sleep for something like 1/3 of our lives. I know what I’d rather be doing in that time. I mean if you think about it, you close your eyes and lie still for a select amount of hours, open and helpless from people writing ‘cunt’ and pictures of dicks on your head. If you’re involved with TRUANTS those hours are lowered drastically and replaced with LOL’s but we still get to write about sweet tunes. Hell, I’m about to write about a song based on a sample of someone snoring. Now this remix by Voltron may be a bit tongue in cheek and probably made in 10 seconds but I’ll damned if  I don’t post it. Look out for the debut release on Discobelle coming soon, but enjoy some Italo based snoring while you’re at it.

Koudlam’s See You All is a ludicrous anthem that never stops giving, built around a triumphant string loop and gloriously slurred vocals. It’s the poppiest thing to emerge from Pan European Recordings, the Parisian crew of modern French psychedelia, curated by Romain Turzi and friends.Whilst the original is all about the deranged French composer (realname Gwenhael Navarro) putting the world to rights and screaming rainbow euphoria, recent R&S signings Vondelpark defuse the melodrama – showering it in muted, elegiac tones for the recent UK release, via Luv Luv Luv. Everything becomes translucent, an eerie journey through rabbit-holes and discarded souls. Gwenhael’s tearaway vocal gets isolated, ascending through a series of angel-dusted synthwalls, lamenting flourishes and solace 2-step. A final journey, weightlessly passing through sunset after sunset into nothing. It makes me want to cry. I can’t though.

One of the last releases we featured prior to our revamp, Stopmakingme’s Rattle EP represented another accomplished step forward in his production catalogue. Dan Avery has also been kind to give away a couple of his recent productions including remixes for Bag Raiders and a ska-heavy Hercules & Love Affair edit. Of the three originals on the EP, whilst ‘Smint’ is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face because of the robotic MJ refrain, it’s ‘Tempo’ that grabs the attention. It is evocative of the best tracks that Simian Mobile Disco have released, deceptively slow yet at the time triggering vigorous foot stomping and booty shaking, the track certainly lives up to its title. To celebrate the release of the EP on Bang Gang, Stopmakingme has given ‘Tempo’ away to encourage you to buy the full thing, which includes a sumptuous remix of ‘Smint’ by In Flagranti.

Can it be that it was all so simple? Rap group samples soul song. Funk revival band covers rap track. So what’s the next step? Putting the vocals over the cover obviously. So simple in fact, that the perpatrators of this latest sonic assault are calling their release Captain Obvious. I don’t know much about Freqnik & WDRE, except that they’ve got a bunch of cool mashups and DJ experiments and this latest effort combines Wu-Tang’s C.R.E.A.M. with the instrumental jam of the same name by El Michels Affair (on a side note, if you haven’t heard EMA’s Enter The 37th Chamber, go find it). The combination is making my eyes bleed. In a good way.
