Premiere: Dawit Eklund – Litchi Juice

Now coming up to their seventh release in early November, Washington, DC-based label 1432 R have really impressed us the last year with their introduction to Ethiopian-based dance music and off-kilter electronics. Headed up by Joyce Lim, Sami Yenigun and Dawit Eklund, the trio formed when the latter two started throwing warehouse parties while studying at George Washington University. Joyce was introduced shortly after via friends and the label soon followed through the shared idea that ‘music is the highest art’. First starting to share music around April 2014, they introduced Ethiopian producer Mikael Seifu to the fold, who has since been a regular contributor to the label’s output alongside fellow producer Endeguena Mulu. The Bicep boys started their Truancy Volume with Mikael Seifu’s brilliant ‘Tuff Ruff”, for which we were inundated with ID requests all over our SoundCloud. More recently the label has found a home on London’s Radar Radio, taking the first Sunday slot every month.

The track we’re premiering comes as part of Eklund’s debut solo release, The Ouroboros EP, due out on November 10th. Described as a funk-laced trip through ‘gully club music’, “Litchi Juice” draws inspiration from dance-floor legends such as Pepe Bradock and Theo Parrish. As well as this premiere today, we can also quietly mention that we’ll have something from the whole 1432 R crew coming up on Truants before the end of 2015, so stay tuned for that.
