A Great Emblem

Now this EP has been out for a couple of weeks now, but with the release of Flying Lotus‘ new album ‘Cosmogramma’ which bares resemblances, it only felt fitting to do a post on this, considering how good it is.

Gold Panda is a London based producer making beautifully constructed pieces of electronic music, with a big passion for all things Japanese, having apparently sold a large portion of his huge record collection to pay for a Japanese Diploma. Now that’s dedication! Using samples ripped from old records, VHS tapes and old 80’s video games found in charity shops, his tracks are very reminiscent of artists such as Four Tet, although I’d describe his sounds as being slightly more hard hitting and verging on being more dance floor orientated. With the BBC tipping him as becoming one of the best rising stars of 2010, I can wholeheartedly agree, as his recent EP titled “You” is a huge testament to this. Major Eastern influences shine through on ‘You’ with some gorgeously crafted hip-hop-esque drums, but its the chopped up vocals that really make the track for me. On the flip side, Gold Panda turns to a post garage sort vibe with a track called ‘Before We Talked’. For those worried about tomorrow’s Election results – Sit back, put these on and enjoy.

Bonus: Seams remix of  ‘You’.
