Recommended: Kim Brown – Evermind EP

Just Another Beat is a German label with no image or renowned producer that we know of behind it. What we do know is that for the last three year they released the music of relatively unknown artists with little to no fanfare. They continue their streak of near perfect records with Kim Brown’s second 12-inch of the year. We praised their “Spring Theory EP” for it’s silky basslines and pads dripping with reverb, but what specifically stood out was how genuine the EP sounded. Both tracks oozed of two people enjoying themselves and that casually worked with sounds they found pleasing. Their “Evermind EP” brings the same qualities; they’re both easy listening and the sort of tunes we’d love to hear after a long night of dancing as the sun comes up and we’ve heard Robert Johnson has the perfect balcony for that.

We’ve come to expect lengthy builds from Kim Brown tracks, and “People’s Republic” is no different. There are a couple minutes of groove building before the bassline joins the fray. Even that occurs in a relaxed matter; there’s no real thud and instead it cooly strolls in. The overall atmosphere is slightly lethargic with classic strings leading the charge. These guys certainly have a thing for bongo drums (or a 727) because “Based On A True Story” is full of them; the drums alone would make the track standout as DJ tool alone. After the track settles in we’re treated a melodic low-end making it a challenge to not swing our heads back and forth. Once again, this duo has done a wonderful job crafting tracks that are uplifting but at the same time remind us that this feeling is temporary. Hardwax’s signature blurb sums it up nicely: “Atmospheric, epic house grooves”.
