With S-X’s Woo Riddim and Spooky’s Spartan showing that Grime Instrumentals are as strong as ever at the moment it’s great to see a flourish of new producers breaking through. Step up a new release from the Oil Gang crew who drop a range of four different grime instrumentals from the likes of Darq E Freaker, Mistayif, Splurt and the now infamous Spooky. Opening with the man, ‘Over Capacity’ is a straight up grime banger with a sub bass to die for and simple catchy hook that although heavily repeated in the usual 16 bar grime style, it never grows stale over the four and half minutes the song last for. I’d love to hear someone dropping some bars over this mind you. There’s a Mosca Edit in circulation somewhere which you can peep in his FACT Mix. Newcomer Mistayif follows up with ‘Fortress Riddim’ taking some orchestral string samples and working them to into a simple but highly danceable piece of production whilst Butterz favourite and ‘Next Hype’ producer Darq E Freaker takes some vocals and melodies and cuts them up to form the frenzied ‘Rhythm & Slags’. I’m still undecided whether Spooky’s or the last track by Splurt is my favourite but they both go hard for sure. Starkey previously described it as ‘the way Grime should sound like in 2010’. Things could get very aggressive in 2011 then. Stream Spooky’s Over Capacity below and preview and purchase the rest here.
