Don’t You Think I Do

Kamau Baaqi, the skilled Dubai-based, Detroit-born and Berlin-elect producer, who’s better known under his nom de guerre Darling Farah, has released his EP Berline through Civil Music earlier today. This release holds two tracks by his own handcraft; the title-track and one sweet club mix to go with it. The original version sounds big, in the metrical sense of the word – it sounds like it would fit perfectly being played out in a desolate manufactory on an industrial terrain and although that is the point of a lot of techno producers, the sound Darling Farah setts of isn’t one I would describe as techno. His songs sound way more transcendental and easeful, something that you could both listen to while preparing for a few z’s or while you’re dancing off your feet, are uplifting but still a bit spooky at times. When it comes to production, he lists Daedelus as one of his main inspirations as well as “Metal Fingers” DOOM; the IDM meets hip-hop influence introduced here is something that’s easier to trace in his productions.

The track Berline was finished about a year ago and the beginning of the conjunction between Darling Farah and Civil Music, with Berline kicking off as a first single. And although it’s one year later, Darling Farah is happy with the track. “I was a bit nervous at first because I was wondering if people would still be into it today, ” he comments on the timespan between the production process and the release date. “I was in a different mindset back then. For this version and the club version I applied everything I had learned over the rest of the year, small things but some may say things that really helped.”. And it certainly did. Already received some kind words by the likes of Erol Alkan and Bok Bok, this EP is destined to travel from stereo to club to iPod to birthday. The club mix is a wonderful track if not my personal favourite of the EP; one that also includes remixes by Dirtybird’s Christian Martin, a no-nonsense more minimal mix by the lovely Clara Moto and one by Funkineven that will hit you hard. In the face. With acid. This EP is an absolute must-have, I’d say. Don’t sleep on this and head over to the Civil Music store to either order the vinyl or buy it as a digital download. We have a cheeky little preview for you on TRUANTS; the miracle that is Darling Farah’s club mix of Berline.

This should keep you quiet for a while, but Darling Farah will be back soon anyway. Another 12″ single/EP release is on it’s way as well as remixes for Kry Wolf and Drums of Death. We heard through the grapevine he will also be contributing to the first Truancy Compilation. Hush now. ?

  1. Good to see Darling Farah finally getting a released. The man’s amazing. Also, a Darling Farah Truancy mixtape would be quite delicious.
