Born Free No Freedom No Free

M.I.A. is back with her first single of her third album. It’s definitely the opposite of what I was expecting from miss Arulpragasam, but this certainly isn’t a bad thing at all. Instead of her characteristic hip-hop meets electronic music meets world music trademark, this track is about a ten steps away from the soca, baile funk, bhangra and all that jazz we were used to. She has always listed The Clash and other punk artists amongst her influences but she has never made it any clearer in her music than she does in Born Free. For this track she teamed up with the legendary vocalist of the no wave/industrial/whatever Trevor duo Suicide, Alan Vega, and sampled their punk anthem Ghost Rider for this track. The result turned out to be a SICK acid rock kind of track with a weird yet fantastic melancholic vibe to it.  It might need two or three plays before one can embrace the track but alas, it’s lovely. M.I.A’s new untitled album is coming up in June and this little gem gives us a little indication of what her album will sound like. So did Diplo before by stating in an interview that this album will sound like “Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective”. He’ll be one of the collaborates on this album amongst Blaqstarr, Rusko, Derek of Sleigh Bells and Switch. I’m psyched for this album like an Olympic athlete seconds before the starter bucky done gun. ?

ETA: This supposedly has Iggor Cavalera on drums! Suicide AND Sepultura, wow!
