George Levings or Endian is a name destined to become synonymous with gritty techno in the coming months.  Much like his close friend Boddika he’s flying in from leftfield as he’s spent most of his musical career part of the drum & bass duo Commix.  So what’s the deal?  Well, his goal is to keep his music as “raw and analogue” as possible and with his first outing on Electric Minds last year, he succeeded.  Fast forward six months and he’s at it again via Nonplus, this time with two growling cuts plus a large dosage of swing.

The title track, “Birdhouse” acts as a bridge between his drum & bass background and his current infatuation with techno.  The pads are high timbre and straight out of the nineties.  It straddles the border of dark garage thanks to its kicks, which sit so nicely with the drums it’s difficult to tell whether they’re four-by-four or not.  On the flip there’s “DBPLT01”, a slowed down techno roller that’s one for the witching hour.  Clocking in at just over six minutes, it leaves you wishing there were another ten to follow.  It’s not that it’s overly aggressive or anything, but it is so hypnotic that even the slightest changes evoke a large response.  Being as minimal as it is for the right effect it needs to be heard in a club, where it is not only amplified but takes on a life of its own with natural movement and groove.  This one is definitely a gem and comes highly recommended.
