Premiere: Brown Irvin – Bay Fog

Brown Irvin is a new project from LA’s AshTreJinkins, whose main focus over the past decade has been in the world of dusty, beat-driven hip-hop. This new persona sees him move in different directions, a side project for him to explore house and techno from his own particular point of view. Having released a three-track digital EP on LA’s No Secrets last month, he’s about to drop a tape on new label Motion Ward. While A-side “Tone” demonstrates a more direct urgency, “Bay Fog” dabbles in murkier tones. A nine-minute affair, recorded live, it sees Brown Irvin deal in hazy swathes, as dusty as any rugged hip-hop jam. Barking honks play out over a crackling drone, before muted, mid-range synths kick in. The groove is never clearly defined, beats and sounds kicking in and out just when it all seems settled, while whispers and dank bass collide to unsettle further. Enjoy our exclusive premiere.

Brown Irvin – Tone/Bay Fog is out on Motion Ward on October 27. Pre-order here.
