Sunday’s Best Pt. I

Sunday is the golden clasp that binds together the volume of the week, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said. To celebrate these words, and to offer you something to wash away your hangovers with, your dearest Truants will be teaming up every weekend to offer you some exquisite free downloads they stumbled upon during the course of the week. These songs are also suitable to listen to on blue Mondays, Chewidden Thursdays, Good Friday, Tolkien Reading Day and Courir de Mardi Gras. First up is a track given away by “everyone’s favourite band” Friendly Fires in collaboration with the magical Azari & III. The track is taken from and written for Friendly Fires’ Suck My Deck compilation. The track is a classic house track, Azari & III taking care of the verse whereas Friendly Fires provide for the spoken vocals and the chorus. The track is simply stunning but I expected nothing else.

There aren’t enough words to describe the brilliance of this remix brought to us by Nosaj Thing, real name: Jason Chung (geeks like me might have noticed Nosaj is just an anagram of Jason). Like many, Chung started producing when he was just a teenager but unlike most of his fellow bedroom producers at the time, he released a successful debut album called ‘Drift‘ and shared stages all over the world with big league players such as Diplo, Bassnectar, Daedelus, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer (and just about every one else in the Brainfeeder crew). Even if you can’t stand the original, you should check this out and listen how Nosaj Thing takes this cheesy chart-topper to a whole new level.

It has been surprisingly quiet on electro-pop duo Lo-Fi-Fnk‘s battleground the last several months, if not years – one humble single called Marchin was leaked on the internet a couple of months ago and that was all there was to our fix of Lo-Fi. Last week the Swedes finally returned with a new single called Sleepless, a second taste of their new album. The original sounds a bit jocular at first listen but it’s definitely a grower; a tranquilizing and incredibly catchy electro-pop song. As given away by themselves, the track comes with three remixes. The one that sticks out is the remix by the Finnish trio Mvseum; the hopeful elements made place for a somewhat haunting sound and the pop has been replaced with something techier, deeper and more spatial: the outcome is pleasing.

Oh Land is a beautiful, talented Danish electro-popper (née Nanna Øland Fabricius) who also happens to be an ex-ballerina (jealous much?) – her new synth-infused offering Sun Of A Gun has been popping up on minimixes among respected dance heads over the last month. This Yuksek remix is the definiton of ‘a grower’ for me – listen once; listen twice; that way addiction lies.

Youth / Young Edits turns this classic into a real dancefloor groove, as the bassline bobbles along with a real touch of Acid House, this grows and grows until you can’t take it no more. Youth’s edits are all superb and all as good as the next, I recommend going over to his soundcloud and listen in awe.

THE CURE – WHY CAN’T I BE YOU (YOUNG EDITS DRUGGED OUT VERSION) (320 kbps)

An artist who in my opinion is criminally underrated is Bristols, Bowski. I don’t know how an artist can make a song as amazing as Hooves, get mad support from Fake Blood, yet still be so small and have only just over 10,000 views on myspace. A mystery well in need of solving. His most recent piece of work is a a remix of the fantastic Caribou, taking their much loved track Sun and taking into deep minimal territory. Highly recommend for evening chilling. As well as being a fantastic producer he holds a residency for Wax:On nights in Bristol, so for any Bristolians reading the blog, be sure to check him out next time! Also I’ve just been informed that a debut EP and a remix for Boy 8 Bit should be surfacing pretty soon so keep watch!
