Sunday’s Best Pt. XII

Try finding good music on Sunday. We’ve already posted one remix of Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers” by Tyler, The Creator here on Truants, but earlier this week Stephen Fasano a.k.a. The Magician, formerly of Aeroplane, gave away his version as a Valentine’s gift and took it in a completely unique path, creating an upbeat jam that will make you long for the days of summer that still seem so distant. To give you an inkling to its vibe, it was originally tagged as The Magician’s Epic Piano Mix, and it certainly lives up to its title. The Magician has also remixed the later mentioned The Aikiu’s “Red Kiss” and the quality of these two efforts means we need not worry about his ability to ‘fly’ once more.

Odd Future’s smooth operator, Frank Ocean, dropped an amazing free record this week titled Nostalgia, ULTRA. He had a great guest spot on the hook of Mellowhype’s Hell “I got, I got anime on the screen…” and I’m sure he’ll be on Goblin but I wasn’t expecting his solo debut to be this strong. Already showing an amazing talent for songwriting, this track could go up against the very best of The-Dream. Can’t put a finger on the beat so I’m sure if it’s recycled or not but it’s the lyrics here that are stealing the show. “I believe a woman’s temple, gives her the right to choose/ but baby, don’t abort” “I don’t believe marriage is between a man & a woman/ But between love and love.” This is Frank’s manifesto, its smooth and it might just get you laid. Definitely hyphy about his future.

I’ve been loving Justin Robertson‘s recent output under his Deadstock 33s moniker, particularly his remix of Shadow Dancer’s Catmoves, and his latest release continues that trend. Astro Thing, given away for free for the Orlando Boom clubnight. Lovely natural-sounding percussion, a grooving acid lead that grows and morphs across the octaves, I can’t believe he’s just giving it away. What a gent. Something to make your Sunday hangover a little bit easier.

Ripperton created one of my favourite house records of last year with his album “Niwa” which contained some incredibly great songs such as a “A Simple Thing”. Yet his remix of St Plomb‘s “Precious Soul” seemed to hide itself from me until recently. Ripperton keeps it deep and full of feeling as the vocals and pads work in conjunction for beautiful build that only stops once you get to the end, a delightful 10 minutes of real house music.

Brodinski is a name that needs no introduction on Truants, with a forthcoming track with Guillaume of The Shoes on the  mind-blowing Truants compilation and some new tracks, Manifesto and Tramp3 receiving massive support, getting a release on Cajual Records, these are exciting times in the world of Louis. Here we have his return to the remixing fold after a slight hiatus. The original track by The Aikiu featured on the most recent Kitsune Maison compilation, but is getting a full release on Abracada Records and whilst the original oozes with synths and 80s pop, Brodinski takes it in a decidedly different direction, creating a dark atmosphere with spiraling stabs and builds creating a track befitting any dance floor.

My wonderful Nan probably knows me better than I know myself and maintains that I always root for the underdog, whether I am aware of it or not. As such, the marvelous old bird is right in this instance for sure, with Appo’s sparky re-edit of Fern Kinney’s “Baby Let Me Kiss You”. This is one of my favourite slabs of sultry disco and was denied the limelight it deserved upon its release in 1980 as a b-side to “Together We Are Beautiful” which took centre stage, and eventually gave Kinney her first and only UK number 1 hit. I kinda like that my preference is for the lesser known of the two, a rare instance where the b-side is, to my mind at least, infinitely superior. The track oozes sex appeal and I think it is fair to say, is as camp as the Babycham float at Brighton Pride, yet has more than enough swaggery chutzpah to offset the fizz and keep things rolling on the ice-cool go-slow vibe, punctuated with a generous sprinkling of lazery cosmic bleeps and whistles to garnish. Nice one Nan -Team Underdog wins hands down.

I caught this tune under the radar about a month or two ago. Werk Discs boss and the prolific faceless producer Zomby deliver it once again. With their “ZVA” (Zomby vs Actress) collaboration. Who have been spewing out tracks sporadically over twitter for the past couple of months. This particular tune is essentially just a bootlegg remix of Busta Rhymes feat. Pharell “Light your ass on fire”. I like to think of it as playing through an old computer with a malfunctioning soundcard. With the additional lo-res sounds signature of Actress’s style. Accompanied with some strings.

  1. Finally getting to listen to Frank Ocean properly today and the comparison with The-Dream is so apt. Just gorgeous.
