Recommended: Jackmaster – FabricLive 57

The Glaswegian Numbers authority and dance floor dynast Jackmaster is next in line to release an installment of the FabricLive series. It’s an emotional one. Compromising 29 tracks in a little over an hour, Jack Revill takes us on a trip through several big booty hits, a little bit of garage, Detroit house classics and some present-day tidbits – as always he effortlessly overturns atmospheres, and focuses more on old, sometimes forgotten, tracks instead of turning the party in a forthcoming one. It’s a real task for the listener to make out where some of the tracks dissolve into the subsequent tracks sometimes, but he also keeps up the tempo with some quick and impressive hit-and-run transitions. “It’s always been about the party for me and I think that’s really come through in the mix,” reads Revill’s statement about the mix and that’s exactly what it is. A party mix, though it is suitable for any time of the day as it’s a high powered tee-total, but by no means too thundering.

Notorious for picking amazing opening tracks, whether they’re productions by the Neptunes or club anthems from the early 80’s, Revill goes for the latter and kicks it off with a track by roommates of Jimi Hendrix; “Release Yourself” by the brothers Aleem. It sets the tone for the the mix; enlivened, infectious and uplifting. The first third of the mix is a bit calmer than the opening track might suggest however; quick on his feet Revill goes through a handful of diverse tracks, seamlessly coalescing Paris Grey’s vocals on the Magic Juan remix of Inner City’s “Big Fun” into a short fragment of tribal drums brought to us by Dutch producer Gregor Salto. After this joyous atmosphere of the introduction, Revill changes course in a matter of a second, and with the arrival of Model500’s the mix takes up a bit of a deeper feel by going through some Antony Shakir, Doug Willis and new Martyn.

Although there’s something good to say about all of his track choices, on a first listen the collaboration between Geiom and Terrible Shock “2 4 6” will grab your immediate attention. Geiom previously worked with the Midlands bound MC on “Feel So Bad” which came out through Geoim’s own imprint Berkane Sol – the track featured on this mix name checks Jackmaster and the Numbers crew. It’s followed up by a Doug Willis classic, then by another climax: “Emotions” by UK Funky producer Jook 10. As the title suggests, the track is a touching one. The emotive strings are smoothly blended in with Mr. White’s vocals on a production by Larry Heard and the mood building during these mere two minutes is simply beautiful, and to come round again we get treated to a bit of acid post-flux.

Picking up the pace with Addison Groove’s “Make Um Bounce” and SBTRKT and Sinden’s flashy “Seekwal”, the middle part of the mix is where the party really gets going. It’s time to throw your hands in the air at the unreserved booty bass crew Splack Pack and their cheeky track “Shake That Ass Bitch”, the group appearing a second time a little later with another thong song called “Scrub Da Ground”. The deep house gem “Don’t You Want It”, produced by Mad Mike featuring Davina takes care of another dose of Detroit classics, a characteristic ingredient in Jackmaster’s DJ-sets. More Underground Resistance follows within ten minutes: the classic “Jupiter Jazz”. Arriving at AFX after about an hour, Revill builds up to the conclusion of the mix; he throws in a bit of Skepta and wraps it all up with Radiohead’s “Idioteque”.

The mix does what Revill himself and the track listing indicate: it’s pre-party, party and after party material. Being a big fan of all of Jackmaster’s mixes, this one just launched itself to the top of my favourites, and although the FabricLive series have been going strong since the very beginning, this is a notable one. Cue repeat playlist, for the rest of the Summer.
