Dust-Covered R&B Mixes

In an attempt to take fall cleaning to the ultimate next level, I’ve been excavating the depths of my old music folder on my very first desktop computer from years ago and it’s proven to be more than fruitful for me. Aside from an abundance of Nobuo Uematsu soundtracks and some Dashboard Confessional here and there, there were some dust-covered gems that I’ve been rediscovering and re-jamming to. I’m sure that in about five years we’ll all be whipping our hair to Willow Smith and whatnot, but until then I have the following girls keeping me sweet.

First up is a lovely little UK Garage remix done by Marvel & Eli for 702’s You Don’t Know, who gained a lot of praise for reworks in the nineties on Whitney Houston tracks like It’s Not Right, But It’s Ok and My Love Is Your Love. I loved this original track by itself so much as well, it brings back the memories of waiting for this hype music video to pass by on television about twice a day. Technology is great and all, but that feeling of hanging around the music channels for your fave video of the week is irreplaceable. Beat that, YouTube, I challenge you. And I don’t mean that as an encouragement to bring up more advertising, because watching Sven Kramer tear his pants in a commercial is slowly and painfully torturing my mind.

And then there’s this Destiny’s Child edit done by Scott Storch for Cater 2U. This track had me so confused, because around the time that I first heard this one, I also had just come to know Scott Storch had binded himself to Paris Hilton’s first solo singing venture, which subsequently tried to blacklist the man from my brain until infinity. But then he came up with this remix and I couldn’t possibly block out someone in charge of something so sweet. This edit beats the original and is like Christmas warmth come to life in audio. Thanks forever for this one, piano man.

The original By Your Side by Sade is an amazing song to begin with, but the Neptunes remix is probably one of my favourite tracks ever. I don’t really have anything else to add to this description other than the fact that I think this remix is the definition of perfection, but I would like to add that I love the video mashup of this remix with the original track’s music video, directed by one of my favourite directors Sophie Muller. Sophie’s responsible for loads of great videos nowadays for the likes of Beyoncé, Shakira, Cheryl Cole etcetera, but back in the days I came to know her as No Doubt’s resident music video director and delivered amazing videos for one of my favourite bands from my early years. She was also responsible for the haunting video for Jeff Buckley’s So Real, the kooky fun one for Lily Allen’s Smile and that whimsical video for my personal fave guilty pleasure song Murder on the Dancefloor, check it.

Okay, the last one I want to share isn’t really an old nostalgic track or anything, but it falls in line with the female vocals remixed into excellence, so Melé’s new remix of Cassie’s Long Way 2 Go still passes the test for this post. Apparently Cassie has some kind of supernatural power in bringing out the best remixes and samples in tracks (as artists such as Kingdom, Deadboy and Brenmar have already been proving in recent times) and young Melé is no exception to this rule. There’s something invincible about this playful remix that has you spinning it non-stop all day, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
